On 8 and 9 January 2019, ten central trade unions and several independent federations across India will join together in a historic general strike. The
IndustriALL Global Union, in consultation with its trade union affiliates in the base metals sector, has issued the following statement in relation to the U.S. government’s recent decisions on tariffs on steel and aluminium imports which take effect today 23 March.
The current trade regime has already led to an intensification of precarious work and contractualisation of employment in the region. Permanent contracts, a key component of decent work as defined by the ILO is seen by business as a rigidity in employment regulations that needs to be done away with.
IndustriALL, CCC and the ITUC are therefore urging the European Union to seek agreement with Sri Lanka on a set of benchmarks to bring the country into compliance with core labour standards, particularly ILO Conventions 87 and 98.
