Australian public service broadcaster SBS recently covered the work of trade unionists and civil society organisations in pressuring the country’s conservative government led by Scott Morrison to support a waiver on COVID-19 vaccines.
In April, NSW Nurses and Midwives’ Association and Public Services International (PSI) co-organised a Facebook live event discussing how Australian political leaders could play a leadership role at the upcoming World Trade Organization meeting to support rapid and equitable access to vaccines.
PSI and its affiliates also successfully lobbied the Australian Labor Party (ALP) opposition to publicly support the waiver, and worked with The Australian Council of Trade Unions (ACTU) and other groups to get over 50,000 signatures on a petition demanding that the Morrison government support the full waiver.
